Teaching Assistantships

Teaching Assistantships (“TAships”) are Academic Student Employee positions reserved for current enrolled students. All TAships are awarded as a percent of full-time, with 50% TAships being the most common: the percentage refers to the percent of a full-time 40-hour week worked, meaning a 50% TAship would average to 20 hours per week for the length of the appointment.

Fee Remission

Pursuant to Article 11 of the ASE employment contract –eligible graduate student employees appointed at 25% or greater are entitled to 100% remission of tuition and eligible fees charged. The fees included in the fee remission are the: (1) Student Services Fee, (2) premium for the Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP), and (3) 100% partial fee remission toward campus fees as set forth in the collective bargaining agreement. UC will cover Nonresident Supplemental Tuition for up to three (3) years for eligible ASEs employed at 25% or greater who have advanced to candidacy in their degree program.

TAships in the College

The eight graduate groups in the College of Biological Sciences do not award or have access to teaching assistantships; these are awarded by individual academic departments. CBS students seeking TAships are encouraged to approach any department they feel qualified to TA for.

TA Jobs by Department

TAships are awarded by individual academic departments according to their own procedures for recruiting and hiring TAs. Students in any program are authorized to serve as a TA for any department.
